Kano Electoral Commission Reschedules LG Polls

The Kano state Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, has announced the rescheduling of the Local Government election to October 26.

The electoral umpire had earlier scheduled the polls to November 30.

At a press conference in Kano on Friday, Chairman of the commission, Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi, said the decision is in recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court judgement that granted autonomy to Local Governments.

“In recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court decision, the mutual agreement between States and Federal Governments and upon the expiration of October deadline on Local Government Financial Autonomy, the Commission is justifiably impelled to reschedule the already scheduled Local Government Election to 26th October, 2024 as against 30th November, 2024.

“The Commission therefore, implored you the stakeholders to understand the compelling situation and give the Commission your most deserving support and cooperation,”

Malumfashi explained that based on the revised timetable, campaigns would commence from September 1 to 12 midnight of October 26.

According to him, parties primaries and submission of names of candidates to the commission begins September 3 and end on September 26.

He added that sales of forms would begin on September 15 to close on September 26, adding that submission of all completed forms would commence on September 27 and end on October 8.

Verification of candidates by the commission and submission of names of political parties agents starts on October 9 and stop at October 14.

He disclosed that election results by the commission would be announced on Sunday, October 27.

Malumfashi also states that the commission had skated November 9 for rerun elections.
