Our Activities Tackles Cholera, Chronic Malnutrition Among Pregnant Women in Kano — CSADI Chief

The Community Support and Development Initiatives (CSADI) says Kano state has recorded significant low Cholera cases and improvement in public health as a result of its activities which educates pregnant women on the importance of personal hygiene as well as taking drugs only after doctor’s advise.

The Executive director of CSADI Hajiya Zainab Ahmed Suleiman disclosed this shortly sent-off and distribution of certificate to volunteers who work with the association in the implementation of ANRiN project in Kano municipal local government area within the metropolis on Friday.

ANRiN is a 5-year performance-based intervention led by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGoN) which is aimed at addressing chronic malnutrition among the vulnerable population (pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls, and children under five years of age) within the communities in 12 states, namely Abia, Akwa Ibom, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo and Plateau State for increased access to a community-based Basic Package of Nutrition Services (BPNS).

Mrs. Suleiman said the association been one of the implementing Community Based Organizations CBOs in Kano have recorded significant progress in tackling the issues of Anemia, Cholera and Malaria in the municipality.

“In CSADI we did not have incident of attack, phone snatching, or any illness because when we are to start the project, some husband refused to allow their wives to do the work, but with support of traditional rulers who gave their children to be our local guides and escort our staff to various locations for the success of the activities,” said executive director.

“We have a lots of achievement in the area of Anemia because our pregnant women are taking their drugs and the incident of diarrhea was very minimal in Kano and you people would even observed that as well as Malaria. The incidences of Cholera we don’t have it because we are educating women on hygiene, hand washing, taking of very good water and environmental sanitation,” She told journalist.

She urged Kano state government to continue with the project as it remained key areas in tackling communicable diseases and improving public health, adding that people should embarked house-gardening as it help in cultivating vegetables which are very nutritiously important to human health.

“Some women have little knowledge on the importance of local resource food we produce, here in CSADI we produce what we called “Garin Bul-bul” we use Millet, or sorghum or with ground-nut and soya beans, we produce a very delicate and nutritious food which is very important to pregnant women and lactating women. So the women who come in contact with us would have ability to produce important food for the family,” she said.

The executive director then called on government at all levels and stakeholders to contribute in securing any part of the country, saying the issue of insecurity remain key in triggering economic hardship, crises as well as hunger across the country.

In a remark, the ward head of Gandu in Kano municipal local government area Alhaji Alkasim Yakubu represented by Alhaji Garba Yakubu commended CSADI for a job well done, saying their activities have contributed immediately in curbing spread of communicable diseases in Gandu and by extension the Kano municipality.

He assured that the office of district head and Kano state Emirate council will continue to work with any nongovernmental organization capable of improving people’s health.

In an interview with GLOBAL TRACKER correspondent, Zainab Uba Hassan and Fatima Umar Faruk both community Volunteers said they have been actively sensitized pregnant women on the importance of personal hygiene, exclusive breast feeding, environmental sanitation and how to take care of themselves before, during and after pregnancy.

“We have been given drugs to pregnant women who would help them, we tell them on ways to avoid complications during pregnancy and how to maintained healthy baby,” said volunteers.

“We have recorded significant progress and positive responses from women across different communities, and as I am speaking to you now many of them are calling on for necessary advise in case of unusual symptoms or changes,” they added.

The volunteers appreciate the support of all the management and staff of CSADI describing its headquarters a home.
