A stark warning from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has revealed the scale of global instability, with more than 130 active armed conflicts now raging across about 60 countries worldwide, a figure that has nearly doubled over the past 15 years.
ICRC disclosed this in a short video clip shared on its official social media handle X formerly Twitter which was monitored by GLOBAL TRACKER.
The humanitarian body says the growing number of conflicts, combined with their increasing complexity and duration, is placing millions of civilians at risk and stretching humanitarian operations to their limits.
From Africa to the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and parts of Latin America, dozens of countries are currently grappling with one or more armed conflicts.
Several African nations remain at the centre of protracted conflicts, including:
Sudan
South Sudan
Somalia
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Nigeria
Mali
Burkina Faso
Niger
These conflicts are driven by insurgencies, communal violence, and political instability, displacing millions across the continent.
The Middle East remains one of the most volatile regions, with ongoing conflicts in:
Syria
Yemen
Iraq
Iran
Israel
Palestine
These conflicts often involve multiple actors and international interests, making resolution increasingly difficult.
In Europe, conflict continues to impact:
Ukraine
The war has had far-reaching geopolitical and humanitarian consequences beyond the region.
Across Asia, several countries are battling internal or cross-border conflicts, including:
Afghanistan
Myanmar
Pakistan
India
Although often less visible, parts of Latin America are also affected by armed violence and organized conflict, particularly in:
Colombia
Mexico
The ICRC warns that today’s conflicts are no longer simple confrontations between two sides. Instead, they involve:
Multiple armed groups
Regional and international actors
Fragmented chains of command
This complexity makes it harder to negotiate peace and deliver humanitarian assistance.
Humanitarian Consequences
The impact of these 130 conflicts across 60 countries is devastating:
Millions displaced from their homes
Rising hunger and malnutrition
Collapsing healthcare systems
Increased risks for humanitarian workers
The ICRC warns that the scale and duration of these crises are overwhelming humanitarian resources.
Call for Global Action
The organization is urging the international community to:
Respect International Humanitarian Law
Protect civilians and aid workers
Invest in long-term solutions to conflicts.
Without decisive action, the ICRC warns, the number of conflicts and their human cost will continue to rise.
