Venezuela ready for ‘good relations’ with US under Trump
“Venezuela will always be willing to establish good relations with US governments, framed by a spirit of dialogue, respect and common sense,” said a statement by Venezuela’s government, released by Foreign Minister Yvan Gil.
The US had a fraught relationship with Venezuela during Trump’s first term, as Washington recognised the country’s opposition leader Juan Guaido as acting president and imposed far-reaching sanctions to try to push out President Nicolas Maduro. Caracas broke off ties with Washington in response.
While US President Joe Biden has eased US sanctions on Venezuela, he has also angered Maduro by refusing to acknowledge his claim of victory in a disputed 2024 election, marred by allegations of fraud.
