As the global community ends its high-level conference on climate change (COP30) and the devastating effects to human life, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has urged world leaders and the private sector to prioritize support to countries hit by armed conflicts globally.

The COP30 Presidency, alongside the Climate High-Level Champions, mark a major step forward in delivering real-world climate action, capping an impactful two-week thematic program and unveiling a new Five-Year Vision for the Global Climate Action Agenda, the conference held in Belem, Brazil.

ICRC in a statement posted on its official social media handle X, urged COP30 member state to scale up climate action in conflict-affected countries who are very vulnerable due to limited capacity that was overstretched.

“Countries affected by armed conflict are especially vulnerable to climate risks, partly due to their limited capacity to adapt, we urge leaders to officially acknowledge this reality by committing to these three actions,” ICRC’s post read.

GLOBAL TRACKER report that Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali, DR Congo, remained the leading African countries hit by armed conflicts, while Ukraine, Palestine, Myanmar, Afghanistan and Haiti in Europe, Asia and American continent.

“The three commitments to ensure that people enduring armed conflict are not left behind;

1. Recommit to urgent, ambitious action to cut emissions and keep warming at livable levels, protecting people and communities from the worst impacts of climate change.

2. Acknowledge at COP that conflict-affected and fragile countries face high climate risks due to limited capacity to adapt, and address these vulnerabilities in decisions.

3. Scale up climate action in conflict-affected countries, especially vulnerable to climate change, and ensure it is backed by adequate, accessible, and tailored financing.

GLOBAL TRACKER learned that the vision charts an action-oriented, coordinated pathway for governments, businesses, investors, cities, subnational regions, Indigenous Peoples, and civil society to accelerate delivery of the Paris Agreement.
