The executive governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the dissolution of the Ministry of Higher Education and its merger with the Kano State Ministry of Education as part of efforts to strengthen coordination and accelerate reforms in the state’s education sector.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Kano state Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the restructuring will lead to the creation of a unified Ministry of Education, which will oversee all education-related matters in the state.
Under the new arrangement, a Directorate of Higher Education will be established within the ministry to manage tertiary education activities.
The directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary and supported by relevant personnel to ensure effective supervision and coordination of higher education institutions across the state.
The statement further explained that all agencies previously under the defunct Ministry of Higher Education, including the Kano State Scholarship Board, will now return to the Ministry of Education.
In addition, state-owned universities and other higher education institutions will be supervised by the newly created directorate within the merged ministry.
The restructuring, according to the government, forms part of broader education sector reforms aimed at repositioning the sector, eliminating duplication of responsibilities, improving policy coordination across all levels of education, and reducing the cost of governance.
Governor Yusuf stated that the reform is designed to enhance efficiency, strengthen accountability, and improve the overall quality of education administration in Kano State.
He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to implementing far-reaching reforms that will revive the education sector and secure a better future for the younger generation in the state.
Consequently, the governor directed the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Kano State Office of the Head of Service to ensure the immediate and seamless realignment of the affected ministries and their respective departments in line with the new structure.
