BREAKING: CAF Strips Senegal of AFCON Title, Declared Morocco Champions

Mar 17, 2026

In a stunning and controversial development that has rocked African football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially stripped the Senegal national football team of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, awarding the championship instead to Morocco national football team.

The decision overturns Senegal’s hard‑fought 1–0 victory over Morocco in the January final and caps months of dispute that has divided fans, federations and football authorities across the continent.

CAF’s Appeal Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the match because its players left the pitch in protest during the final, a departure that the governing body said contravened competition regulations. As a result, the match result was changed to a 3–0 forfeit win in favour of Morocco and Senegal was formally stripped of the championship title.

In its official statement, CAF said the action was taken “in strict application of the tournament regulations governing player conduct and team obligations.”

The decision marks one of the most consequential rulings in AFCON history and raises significant questions about enforcement, fairness and the role of post‑tournament appeals.

Morocco Declared AFCON 2025 Champions

With the appeal upheld, Morocco has been declared the official winners of the 2025 AFCON, adding another crown to its burgeoning trophy cabinet and marking a dramatic turn of events more than two months after the original final was played.

A CAF spokesperson said: “Given the breach of the match obligations, the Appeal Board has applied the relevant regulations. Consequently, the result of the final has been amended and the title awarded accordingly.”

The decision has triggered outrage in Senegal. The Senegalese Football Federation denounced the ruling as “unjust, shocking and detrimental to African football” and signalled that it would explore every legal avenue available including appeals to other sporting adjudication bodies.

In a statement released moments after CAF’s announcement, the federation said it “strongly rejects the notion that our national team forfeited the final” and accused CAF of undermining the integrity of the competition.

Many supporters and commentators have echoed those concerns, calling the late change to the result “unprecedented” and “damaging to the credibility of African football.” Social media platforms erupted with debate within minutes of the announcement.

GLOBAL TRACKER recalled that the original final held in January 2026  saw Senegal defeat Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a tense encounter.

However, the match was marred by a moment when Senegal’s players temporarily walked off the field in protest over officiating and perceived injustices before later returning to complete the game.

Although the on‑field winner celebrated jubilantly at the time, Morocco lodged a formal complaint in the aftermath, arguing that the walk‑off constituted a violation of CAF regulations, a case that the confederation has now upheld.

Reactions Pour in Across Africa

News of the decision has reverberated across national federations, fan bases, and football officials throughout Africa.

Some former players and pundits have said the ruling sets a dangerous precedent, arguing that protests and in‑match disputes should be handled on the field, not retroactively adjudicated long after the final whistle.

Others insist CAF had no choice but to enforce the rules regardless of timing or sentiment, emphasizing that tournament regulations must be applied equally and without exception.

Senegal’s federation has confirmed it will seek further redress, likely turning to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland. Whether that body will intervene remains to be seen.
