Farmers in Albasu Local Government Area of Kano state have raised urgent complaints over alleged intimidation and prolonged non-payment of compensation following the construction of a feeder road linking Hungu and Dalawa communities.

The construction which damaged farmlands last year, has left many struggling to feed their families and maintain their livelihoods.

One of the affected farmers, Kawu Hassan, expressed his frustration over the worsening economic hardship.

“Ever since my farm was affected by the Hungu–Dalawa road project, I have been unable to cultivate my land. The compensation promised to us has not been paid, and this has created enormous hardship for my family.”

Hassan further accused local officials of intimidation, saying; “When we put pressure for our entitlements, some officials try to silence us. We are farmers, not troublemakers, yet we are being treated as if asking for what is rightfully ours is a crime. This has left us helpless.”

Similarly, Hajiya Yelwa, a widow and farmer, highlighted the impact on her dependents, adding that “I cannot provide adequately for my orphans because the compensation for my land has not been paid. We are surviving on handouts while waiting for what the government promised us.”

She added a call for urgent intervention; “I appeal to all relevant stakeholders, including the Kano State Government, to come to our aid and ensure that our entitlements are paid. Without this, many families like mine will continue to suffer and go hungry.”

Another affected farmer, Dattijo Mobi, voiced frustration over delays and local politics.

“The chairman of the local government, being from a this community, should prioritize fairness and settle the compensation. We have waited long enough, and our patience is running out.”

Mobi also appealed directly to the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, stating “We urge Governor Yusuf to intervene immediately. Only his directive can ensure that the council releases the funds owed to us and ends the suffering of our families.”

Reacting to the complaints, Honourable Garba Aliyu Hungu, Executive Chairman of Albasu Local Government Area, denied allegations of intimidation.

He explained that the delay in compensation was due to non-release of funds from the Kano State Government.

“No intimidation has taken place. The council has processed the compensation, but payment has been delayed because the state government has not yet released the funds. Once the money is received, all affected farmers will be paid.”

Despite this, affected farmers insist the delay has caused severe hardship, affecting 54 households in total. While acknowledging the benefits of the road for connectivity, residents insist that their livelihoods must be protected and are calling on the Kano State Government to ensure fair, timely, and transparent compensation.
