Kano Govt Inaugurates Taskforce to Tackle Illegal Structures, Building Violations

The Kano State Government has inaugurated an 11-member special taskforce committee to address the growing cases of illegal structures and building violations across Kano State.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouk Ibrahim, said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was deeply concerned about the increasing number of buildings erected without official approval or constructed in violation of approved building plans, particularly within the Kano metropolis.

According to the SSG, the present administration has invested heavily in urban renewal projects aimed at transforming the state capital through road construction, drainage systems, and environmental beautification initiatives.

“Residents and visitors can clearly see the ongoing transformation under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The government remains committed to restoring order and ensuring proper urban planning across the state,” he stated.

Umar Farouk Ibrahim urged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, sincerity, professionalism, and integrity, stressing that they were selected based on competence and credibility.

He added that the government remains determined to protect Kano’s master plan and promote sustainable urban development for future generations.

Composition of the Committee

The special taskforce is chaired by the Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, while Mustapha Ibrahim Fagge serves as Secretary and Yusuf Yakubu Ismail as Co-Secretary.

Other members of the committee include:

  • Dayyabu Zubairu Gano
  • Ahmad Sunusi
  • Umar Musa Umar
  • Abubakar Usman
  • Zainab Ibrahim Jibril
  • Sunusi Abdullahi
  • Muzammil Ibrahim Yakasai
  • and Bello Zakari

Mandate of the Taskforce

The committee’s terms of reference include:

  • Identifying illegal structures within Kano metropolis,
  • Reviewing building approvals issued within the last two years,
  • Halting developments that violate approved building plans.

The exercise will particularly focus on:

  • Nassarawa,
  • Fagge,
  • Tarauni,
  • and Kumbotso Local Government Areas.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani thanked the state government for the confidence reposed in the members and assured that the taskforce would perform its duties diligently and professionally.

“We appreciate the confidence placed in us by the Kano State Government and assure the public that the committee will carry out its assignment with dedication, fairness, and professionalism,” he said.

Urban development observers say the inauguration of the taskforce signals the Kano State Government’s renewed commitment to enforcing urban planning regulations, protecting public infrastructure, and ensuring orderly physical development across the state capital.
