The Kano State Chapter of the Association of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Nigeria (AONN) has called on governments, politicians, non-governmental organizations, philanthropists, and community leaders to intensify efforts toward supporting children through education, welfare, and protection programmes.

The call was made during the celebration of the 2026 Children’s Day held in Kano, where more than 300 children participated in activities designed to promote good character, education, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship.

Nigeria observes Children’s Day annually on May 27 to celebrate children and promote awareness on issues affecting their welfare, rights, education, and development.

Speaking during the event, the Chairperson of AONN Kano State Chapter, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed Suleiman, MFR, JP, said the programme was originally designed for 150 children but attendance exceeded expectations as more than 300 children turned up.

According to her, the overwhelming turnout demonstrated the confidence reposed in the association’s activities and reflected the growing recognition of efforts aimed at supporting orphans and vulnerable children across Kano State.

“We prepared for about 150 children, but over 300 attended the celebration. This shows the trust and confidence that parents and communities have in our programmes and our commitment to supporting children,” she said.

The event featured lectures, educational discussions, interactive sessions, and songs aimed at encouraging children to embrace good character, respect for parents and elders, discipline, and commitment to education.

Hajiya Zainab explained that the children were engaged in discussions on the importance of good deeds, personal safety, moral values, education, and leadership.

She noted that many of the children displayed remarkable intelligence and confidence during the programme.

“We asked the children questions about good character, education, simple protection measures, and other important issues affecting their lives. We were amazed by the quality of questions they asked. Some of the questions were very intelligent and thought-provoking,” she said.

As part of activities marking the celebration, AONN distributed educational and welfare materials to all participating children, including pencils, exercise books, milk, sweets, cups, and biscuits.

The chairperson described the gesture as part of efforts to encourage learning and make the celebration memorable for the children.

She further challenged politicians and wealthy individuals who frequently donate vehicles and motorcycles to supporters and associates to also remember children through similar acts of generosity.

According to her, children deserve practical support that will contribute to their growth and development.

“We see politicians donating cars and motorcycles to adults. Children are the leaders of tomorrow and also deserve support. Even if it is through bicycles, scholarships, school materials, or other educational support, it will motivate them and contribute to their development,” she stated.

Hajiya Zainab also called on non-governmental organizations, corporate organizations, development partners, and philanthropists to initiate programmes aimed at supporting children, particularly orphans and vulnerable children.

She emphasized that investment in children remains one of the most effective ways of building a better society.

“I urge all organizations and well-meaning individuals to take deliberate steps toward supporting children. Any investment in a child today is an investment in the future of our society,” she added.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of AONN Kano State Chapter, Hassan Ibrahim Gama, said the association has intensified sensitization campaigns targeting parents and guardians on the importance of enrolling children in school.

He expressed concern over the persistent challenge of out-of-school children in Kano State and stressed the need for collective action to address the problem.

According to him, education remains one of the strongest tools for reducing poverty, child labour, street begging, and other social challenges affecting children.

“We are sensitizing parents, especially on the issue of out-of-school children. Every child deserves access to education, and parents must understand the importance of keeping their children in school,” he said.

Gama noted that AONN would continue working with stakeholders to promote child welfare, educational opportunities, and protection for vulnerable children throughout the state.

The celebration ended with songs, educational activities, and goodwill messages encouraging children to remain focused on their studies, respect their parents, and become responsible citizens capable of contributing positively to society.

Participants described the event as both educational and inspiring, commending AONN for its continued commitment to improving the lives of children in Kano State.
