There are indications that former Nigerian international and football administrator, Dominic Iorfa, is preparing to contest for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the next election, amid renewed debate over the direction of Nigerian football administration.

Iorfa’s reported ambition is coming at a time when stakeholders are closely watching developments within the NFF and the broader administration of the country’s football.

Recent developments involving Barau FC, where Iorfa is associated with the management of the club, have also attracted attention.

Iorfa reportedly directed Barau FC to withdraw from the 2026 Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Tournament in Katsina, a decision that has generated questions about the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal and his relationship with the tournament organisers, NFF officials and NFF board member, Sharif Rabiu Inuwa Ahlan.

The Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Tournament is organised annually to provide clubs with an opportunity to prepare for the new football season.

The decision by Barau FC to pull out of the competition has consequently attracted criticism, particularly regarding the manner in which the withdrawal was handled.

However, the circumstances surrounding the decision and Iorfa’s reasons for withdrawing the club would require clarification from him and the club’s management.

Beyond the recent development, Iorfa’s reported interest in the NFF presidency is expected to bring renewed attention to his long career in football administration.

Some stakeholders have raised allegations concerning his management style, including claims of abusive conduct, intimidation, harassment and disrespect towards individuals during his administrative career.

These allegations have not been independently established, and Iorfa has not been given an opportunity to respond to each of the claims contained in the allegations.

If he eventually declares his intention to contest the NFF presidency, questions are also likely to be raised about his previous administrative assignments and the circumstances surrounding his departures from some clubs.

Among the issues likely to attract scrutiny are his spells with Remo Stars and Lobi Stars, including questions about the circumstances surrounding his departures from the two clubs.

Stakeholders may also examine his record in terms of tangible sporting achievements during his various administrative engagements, including the performance of clubs under his leadership and whether they won major domestic honours.

Questions have also been raised about his management of Barau FC, particularly allegations concerning the dismissal of some members of staff and the appointment or involvement of individuals regarded by critics as his associates.

Those claims, however, require responses from the affected parties before definitive conclusions can be drawn.

The emerging political dimension of the situation could also place Iorfa’s relationship with the current NFF leadership under greater scrutiny.

The federation is currently led by Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and any contest for the presidency in the next election is expected to generate considerable interest among football stakeholders across the country.

Iorfa, who has considerable experience in Nigerian football, would therefore be expected to present his vision for the development of the sport if he decides to formally enter the race.

His supporters could point to his long experience and knowledge of football administration, while opponents are likely to focus on his previous administrative record and management style.

For the proprietor of Barau FC, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, the developments surrounding the club are likely to require careful attention to ensure that administrative disagreements do not undermine the team’s sporting objectives or long-term future.

Stakeholders have consequently appealed to the senator to examine the situation carefully and take appropriate action where necessary.

If Iorfa proceeds with his reported ambition, his recent actions and previous administrative record are likely to become subjects of public debate as preparations for the next NFF election gather momentum.

The election could also provide an opportunity for football stakeholders to debate competing visions for Nigerian football, including grassroots development, club administration, league competitiveness, welfare of players and coaches, international performance and institutional accountability.

As of the time of filing this report, Iorfa’s response to the allegations and issues raised was still being awaited as GLOBAL TRACKER correspondent put out several calls to Iorfa’s telephone line but no response.
