A family in Danbare New Layout, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, has been thrown into deep mourning after losing five children within seven days to an illness suspected to be diphtheria.

The five children, comprising three girls and two boys, reportedly died between October 1 and October 7, 2026, leaving their father, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf, and other members of the family devastated.

The children were identified by the family as Ibrahim Yusuf, Zainab Ibrahim, Umar Ibrahim, Aisha Ibrahim, Aliyu Ibrahim and Sadeeq Ibrahim.

According to information gathered from the family, the tragedy began on October 1, when two of the children — a boy and a girl — reportedly died after battling an illness suspected to be diphtheria.

The situation took an even more devastating turn on October 7, when three additional children — two girls and a boy — reportedly died.

The deaths have left the family mourning the loss of all five children within a period of just one week, while raising concerns over the possibility of further transmission within the household and the surrounding community.

GLOBAL TRACKER correspondent, Sani Magaji Garko, contacted the Director-General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KNCDC), Professor Muhammad Adamu Abbas, over the reported deaths.

Professor Abbas promised to investigate the matter and establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The KNCDC Director-General also urged residents to always report suspected diseases to the nearest health facilities and seek prompt medical attention rather than delaying treatment or managing suspected cases at home.

His position is consistent with previous public-health warnings from the KNCDC that early reporting, detection and treatment are critical to preventing deaths and containing the spread of diphtheria in Kano State.

Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf, who resides at Danbare New Layout, is appealing for urgent intervention from relevant health authorities to investigate the deaths, establish the exact cause of the illness and take measures to protect other members of the family and residents of the community.

However, the reported link between the deaths and diphtheria has not been independently confirmed by health authorities as of the time of filing this report.

The Kano State Government commenced a diphtheria immunisation campaign in September covering five local government areas, including Kumbotso, alongside Dala, Fagge, Gwale and Ungoggo. The campaign was part of efforts to prevent further transmission of the disease and increase protection among vulnerable residents.

The KNCDC has also intensified community mobilisation and urged traditional institutions and residents across the state to support vaccination and promptly report suspected cases.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infectious disease that can spread from person to person, particularly through respiratory droplets and close contact. It can cause severe throat infection, breathing difficulties and potentially fatal complications when treatment is delayed.

Health authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of vaccination, early detection and prompt treatment in reducing deaths and preventing transmission.

The family in Danbare is also seeking intervention to ensure that no further lives are lost to the suspected disease in Danbare and neighbouring communities.

GLOBAL TRACKER will continue to monitor the situation and report the findings of the KNCDC investigation as more verified information becomes available.
