The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo and opened disciplinary proceedings against the veteran forward following his departure from the national team’s camp amid a reported dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The action, announced on October 10, 2026, followed Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of the team’s fixture against Denmark.

The 41-year-old Al-Nassr striker reportedly became frustrated after being left unused in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27, despite warming up during the match.

He subsequently questioned the handling of his playing time and alleged that an understanding with the coach had not been respected.

Jesus, however, denied entering into a formal agreement with the player, while leaving open the possibility of Ronaldo returning to the squad.

Following the incident, the federation’s Disciplinary Council initiated proceedings to determine whether Ronaldo violated national team regulations by leaving the camp. The provisional suspension is not a final verdict, as the investigation is still ongoing.

Ronaldo has apologized to his teammates and supporters, accepted responsibility for his actions and indicated that he is willing to face the consequences. He has also expressed his desire to continue representing Portugal.

Reports indicate that the country’s disciplinary regulations could allow a suspension of between one and six months for unjustified abandonment of national team duties, although the final punishment has not been announced.

The development has raised questions about Ronaldo’s immediate future with Portugal, particularly as the team prepares for upcoming international fixtures. A lengthy suspension could prevent the captain from participating in subsequent matches.

Despite the controversy, there has been no announcement that Ronaldo has retired from international football or been permanently expelled from the national team.

The outcome of the disciplinary investigation will determine the punishment he faces and when he could return to represent Portugal.
