The Kano State Government has officially launched its April 2026 polio immunisation campaign, signaling renewed momentum in the fight to eradicate the disease across the state.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed that only three cases of polio were recorded in Kano State in the past year, describing the figure as a major milestone in the state’s public health efforts.

Nabilusi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa, the public relations officer, Kano state ministry of health in a statement sent to GLOBAL TRACKER said the Commissioner stated that the exercise is specifically targeting children aged 0 to 59 months, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and future of young children against the debilitating virus.

To ensure effective coverage, the Ministry of Health has mobilized over 7,000 healthcare workers, who have been deployed across all 44 local government areas of the state to carry out the immunisation campaign.

Dr. Yusuf commended the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf for its continued investment and support for the health sector, noting that sustained government backing has been instrumental in achieving progress in disease control.

He also called on parents, caregivers, and community members to cooperate fully with vaccination teams, stressing that collective participation remains critical to reaching every eligible child.

“All stakeholders have a vital role to play in ensuring that no child is left unvaccinated,” he said.

While acknowledging the contributions of development partners and health organizations in the fight against polio, the Commissioner cautioned that traces of the virus still exist in some areas, underscoring the need for sustained vigilance and community engagement.

The campaign, conducted in collaboration with development partners, forms part of broader efforts to eliminate polio and strengthen routine immunisation across Kano State.

Health officials say the success of the exercise will depend largely on public cooperation and the ability of vaccination teams to reach children in every community, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach areas.
