Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has defended Spain’s position on Palestine after Barcelona star Lamine Yamal drew widespread attention for displaying a Palestinian flag during FC Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations.
The Barcelona star’s actions during the celebrations sparked intense reactions across social media and political circles, with supporters praising the gesture as a message of solidarity while critics argued that politics should be kept out of football.
Responding to questions from journalists during a press conference, Sánchez contextualized the controversy by pointing to Spain’s official diplomatic stance on the Middle East conflict.

“Spain has recognised the state of Palestine,” the Prime Minister stated.
Sánchez added that Spain has consistently condemned violence from both sides since the outbreak of the conflict.
“From the very beginning, Spain condemned the attacks by Hamas, and later condemned the war being waged by the Israeli authorities in the Gaza Strip,” he said.
The remarks were widely interpreted as a defence of Yamal amid growing scrutiny over public figures expressing views on the war in Gaza.
Spain has become one of Europe’s strongest voices calling for a ceasefire and a political resolution to the conflict. Madrid’s recognition of Palestine marked a major diplomatic move that received praise from Palestinian officials but criticism from Israel.
Political observers say Sánchez’s comments reflect his government’s attempt to maintain what it describes as a balanced approach, condemning attacks by Hamas while also criticizing Israeli military operations in Gaza that have caused widespread civilian casualties and humanitarian devastation.
The controversy surrounding Yamal also highlights the increasing intersection between sports and global politics, as athletes around the world continue to use major sporting moments to express political and humanitarian views.
At just 18 years old, Yamal has become one of football’s brightest stars and a central figure in Barcelona’s successful league campaign.
His appearance with the Palestinian flag during celebrations quickly became one of the most discussed moments following the club’s title victory.
Despite the public debate, neither Barcelona nor Spanish football authorities have indicated any intention to sanction the player over the incident.
Analysts say the episode reflects broader tensions across Europe over the Gaza war, where public demonstrations, political divisions and debates over freedom of expression have intensified in recent months.
For now, Sánchez’s remarks have placed Spain firmly behind its official diplomatic position, while also signaling support for the right of individuals including athletes to express humanitarian concerns linked to the conflict.
