The executive Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has commissioned the Kano Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC), a state-of-the-art public health facility established to strengthen disease surveillance, emergency preparedness and rapid response to infectious disease outbreaks across the state.
The centre, located within the premises of the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Kano Municipality, is expected to serve as the state’s coordinating hub for disease prevention, laboratory diagnosis, epidemiological research and public health interventions.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the director general of media and publicity Kano state government hause said the commissioning marks another milestone in the administration’s efforts to build a resilient healthcare system capable of responding effectively to emerging and re-emerging diseases.
Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Yusuf said he was delighted to witness the completion of a project whose foundation he personally laid, describing the facility as a landmark achievement in the state’s healthcare transformation agenda.
He expressed confidence that the centre would significantly enhance Kano’s capacity for disease surveillance, prevention, diagnosis and emergency response, while improving preparedness against outbreaks of infectious diseases.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained investment in the health sector through the provision of modern medical infrastructure, advanced equipment and skilled healthcare personnel to improve health outcomes for residents.
He said strengthening public health institutions remains a key priority of his administration as part of broader efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of the people of Kano State.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described the centre as a major boost to the state’s public health system, saying it would play a vital role in the prevention, detection, monitoring and control of communicable diseases.
According to him, the facility will support surveillance and response to diseases such as tuberculosis, cholera, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases that pose significant public health challenges.
Dr. Labaran Yusuf explained that the centre is equipped with modern facilities, advanced technology and trained personnel to improve early detection of disease outbreaks, coordinate emergency responses and strengthen collaboration with relevant health institutions and development partners.
He commended Governor Yusuf for what he described as his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to transforming the healthcare sector in Kano State.
The commissioner also appreciated development partners whose technical and financial support contributed to the successful completion and equipping of the facility to meet global public health standards.
He said the centre would strengthen epidemiological intelligence, improve laboratory diagnosis and deepen collaboration with national and international partners in preventing and containing infectious diseases across Kano State.
Health experts believe the establishment of the Kano Centre for Disease Control will further enhance the state’s capacity to detect outbreaks early, coordinate rapid interventions and strengthen public health security in one of Nigeria’s most populous states.
