The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of Rogo, Bagwai and Bebeji local government councils for three months over allegations bordering on financial misappropriation, abuse of office, procurement irregularities and breach of public trust.
The affected council chairmen are Abubakar Mustapha of Rogo Local Government Area, Bello Abdullahi Gadanya of Bagwai Local Government Area and Alhassan Salisu of Bebeji Local Government Area.
The decision followed the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Jibril Falgore.

The House directed that each of the affected local government vice chairmen should immediately assume office in an acting capacity pending the outcome of investigations and the expiration of the suspension.
Lawmakers said the suspension became necessary to allow an unhindered investigation into allegations of financial misconduct and administrative infractions levelled against the council chairmen.
According to the committee’s findings, the allegations include financial misappropriation, abuse of office, procurement irregularities and actions considered inconsistent with the principles of accountability and transparency expected of public office holders.
The latest action marks one of the most significant disciplinary measures taken by the 10th Kano State House of Assembly against serving local government chairmen since the inauguration of the present councils.
The development also reinforces the Assembly’s increasing oversight of local government administration amid renewed calls for greater accountability in the management of public resources at the grassroots.
Political observers say the suspension comes at a critical period when Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration has repeatedly pledged zero tolerance for corruption, financial recklessness and abuse of public office.
In recent months, the state government has intensified reforms across several sectors, including land administration, physical planning, healthcare, education and local governance, with senior government officials repeatedly warning that public institutions would be held accountable for the management of government resources.
The action against the three chairmen also follows previous interventions by the Assembly against local government officials accused of misconduct.
Last year, the House suspended the chairman of Rano Local Government over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office and misappropriation of funds before subsequently clearing and reinstating him after investigations.
Analysts believe the suspension of the three chairmen may have wider political implications ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly as local government councils remain strategic structures for grassroots mobilisation and implementation of government programmes.
The decision is also expected to trigger closer scrutiny of financial management practices across the state’s 44 local government councils, with many observers anticipating additional oversight measures by both the Assembly and relevant government agencies.
Neither the suspended chairmen nor their respective councils had publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
