The Committee of States’ Commissioners of Education in Nigeria (COSCEN) has appointed the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, as a pioneer member of its Board of Trustees (BOT).
The appointment, which took effect from August 20, 2026, was formally conveyed to Makoda in a letter dated August 24 and signed by the Chairman of the COSCEN Board of Trustees, Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu.
The appointment comes following the formal registration of COSCEN as an Incorporated Trustee by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), with Certificate of Incorporation No. RN: 9790907, issued on August 20, 2026.

In the letter, Iyamu said it was his honour, on behalf of the COSCEN Secretariat and Board, to formally communicate Makoda’s appointment to the pioneer Board of Trustees.
According to the organisation, the appointment forms part of the constitutionally established structure of COSCEN, which seeks to provide a platform for Commissioners of Education across Nigeria to engage on issues relating to education policy, administration and development.
Tenure To Begin After Service
The appointment letter, however, clarified that Makoda’s actual tenure on the Board would commence after the completion of his tenure as Kano State Commissioner for Education.
It stated that, under the amended constitution of COSCEN, membership of the Board of Trustees is reserved exclusively for Honourable Commissioners who have completed their service as State Commissioners of Education.
“While these BOT appointments are officially made with effect from 20th August 2026, please note that pursuant to the AGM resolution, the actual tenure of each BOT member shall officially commence upon the formal conclusion of your active service as an Honourable Commissioner of Education,” the letter stated.
Iyamu congratulated Makoda on the appointment and conveyed the assurances of his regards.
Makoda’s Education Role
Makoda is currently serving as Kano State Commissioner for Education under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
His appointment as a pioneer member of the COSCEN Board of Trustees places him among the officials selected to contribute to the institutional development of the newly incorporated national body.
The development also provides an avenue for Kano State’s education leadership to participate in broader national conversations on education policy, reforms, administration and service delivery.
COSCEN’s registration as an Incorporated Trustee marks the formal establishment of its institutional structure and provides a platform for Commissioners of Education and former commissioners to contribute to the advancement of education across Nigeria.
Makoda’s appointment is therefore expected to strengthen Kano’s participation in the emerging national education platform while positioning him to contribute his experience to the organisation’s long-term objectives.
