Chad, Mauritania Announces Dissolution of G5-Sahel

Mauritania and Chad, two of the five founding members of the G5 Sahel military alliance, announced its dissolution on December 6, 2023.

The security Analyst and Counter Insurgency Expert in the Lakechad region Zagazola Makama confirmed the development in a post on his social media handle X formerly Twitter.

According to the statement, the two countries said in a statement that they “take note of and respect the sovereign decision” of the other three members, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, to withdraw from the alliance.

Mauritania and Chad have stated that they will “implement all necessary measures in accordance with the provisions of the Convention establishing the G5 Sahel, in particular Article 20.”

Article 20 of the G5 Sahel Convention provides that the alliance may be dissolved “at the written request of a majority of Member States”.
