Chad military leader Mahamat Deby won the country’s presidential election.

The preliminary results released by the electoral commission showed that Deby win 61 percent of the votes cast, while his main rival and Prime Minister Succes Masra came in second with 18.5 percent of the votes cast.

The result means the end of the caretaker government that Mahamat Deby has been leading for three years since the death of his father Idriss Deby.

Even before the election, Mr. Masra declared himself the winner, alleging that some people are planning to spoil his results.

Before voting started, the opposition accused that the election was just a way to legitimize General Mahamat Deby’s stay in power.

The Constitutional Assembly is expected to announce the results officially after a few days.
