Suspected bandits have launched a deadly attack on Lakwaya in Gwarzo Local Government Area, killing two persons, injuring several others, and rustling a large number of cattle in the latest wave of insecurity affecting border communities in Kano State.
Residents said the attackers invaded the town on Thursday at about 4:00 p.m., riding on more than 30 motorcycles and firing sporadically into the air, causing panic and forcing villagers to flee for safety.
A source in Lakwaya, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the armed men reportedly entered the area through Gidan Biris, a settlement located along the Kano–Katsina border corridor often linked to security breaches and cross-border attacks.
According to the source, two residents were killed during the assault, with one victim reportedly shot dead in Lakwaya while another was killed in Gidan Biris.
The source further revealed that the assailants rustled numerous cattle belonging to villagers before security operatives arrived and engaged them in a gun duel.
Confirming the incident, the Zonal Information Officer for Gwarzo Zone, Auwalu Musa Yola, said no abduction had been officially reported as of the time of filing this report, although the attackers succeeded in escaping with several cattle.
He noted that security personnel responded to the distress call and confronted the attackers during the operation.
Sources also disclosed that the body of one of the victims was deposited at Gwarzo General Hospital for medical examination before being released to family members for burial after calm returned to the area.
The latest attack comes barely a week after a similar incident in Gatarin Fulani under Nasarawa Village, further escalating fears among residents of communities bordering neighbouring states.
The recurring attacks have renewed calls on security agencies and government authorities to intensify surveillance, strengthen border security operations, and deploy more personnel to vulnerable rural communities facing growing threats from armed bandits.
Residents say the continued attacks are affecting farming activities, livestock businesses, and daily life, as many villagers now live in fear of further incursions by armed groups.
