The Kano State Government has sealed the controversial Film House Dorayi in Kano metropolis following complaints by residents over alleged violations of physical planning and urban development regulations.

The enforcement action was carried out by the Kano State Taskforce Committee on Illegal Structures headed by the Director General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, who reportedly led officials to the facility before ordering its closure until further notice.

The action followed complaints from some residents of Dorayi who alleged that the facility contravene approved physical planning regulations and urban development standards within the area.

According to the complaints, some residents argued that the structure and activities around the Film House were inconsistent with the environmental and residential layout of the community.

The development, however, has generated mixed reactions among residents of Dorayi and surrounding communities.

While some residents welcomed the government’s action, others defended the Film House, describing it as a development capable of creating employment opportunities and boosting economic activities within the area.

Supporters of the facility argued that entertainment and commercial investments such as the Film House could provide jobs for youths and contribute positively to economic growth in the community.

Some residents also maintained that modern businesses should be encouraged as long as they comply with government regulations and approval procedures.

On the other hand, opponents of the facility insisted that the structure and activities associated with it contravene the religious and cultural setting of the predominantly conservative community.

Critics argued that certain entertainment-related activities were incompatible with the moral and cultural values of the area and therefore should not be allowed within residential neighborhoods.

The disagreement among residents reflects the broader public debate surrounding modernization, urban development and preservation of cultural and religious values in parts of Kano metropolis.

Authorities, however, maintained that the sealing of the facility was connected to issues relating to compliance with physical planning regulations and urban development laws.

The latest development comes amid intensified enforcement operations by the Kano State Government against illegal structures, unauthorized commercial developments and buildings operating without proper approvals across the state.

In recent weeks, the committee on illegal structures has sealed more than 50 properties including plazas, filling stations, commercial buildings, housing estates and construction sites accused of violating town planning regulations.

Among recent enforcement actions were the sealing of Wholesale Electronics Household along Gwarzo Road, stoppage of an illegal housing estate at NNDC Quarters, demolition orders involving structures at Kantin Kwari Market and directives issued to Azman University Kano to provide relevant documents or risk closure.

Speaking during previous enforcement exercises, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani warned that all property owners, developers and commercial operators must comply with all required approvals and documentation or face sanctions including sealing, demolition or closure.

He also reiterated that the committee remains open to receiving complaints from members of the public regarding illegal structures, blocked waterways and developments violating town planning regulations across Kano State.

The latest development further highlights the growing tension between urban modernization, economic interests and preservation of religious and cultural values in Kano State.
