Liverpool have parted company with manager Arne Slot after a disappointing second season that saw the defending Premier League champions finish fifth and miss out on mounting a serious title challenge.
The decision brings an abrupt end to the Dutch coach’s tenure at Anfield, just one year after he guided the Reds to Premier League glory in his debut campaign following the departure of long-serving manager Jurgen Klopp.
Slot arrived at Liverpool from Dutch side Feyenoord in 2024 and immediately won over supporters by leading the club to the league title. His success raised hopes of a new era of dominance at Anfield.

However, Liverpool’s title defence unravelled during the 2025/26 season. Instead of challenging for another championship, the Reds found themselves battling to secure UEFA Champions League qualification. The club also failed to win any domestic silverware, marking a dramatic decline from the heights reached just a year earlier.
In a statement released on Saturday, Liverpool acknowledged Slot’s achievements while explaining the reasons behind the difficult decision.
“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying,” the club said. “The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and, most importantly, successful.”
The club praised Slot’s leadership and commitment, noting that he embraced responsibility from the moment he accepted the challenge of succeeding Klopp and remained committed during a challenging campaign.
Despite those achievements, Liverpool said they had collectively concluded that a change in direction was necessary to help the club continue moving forward.
The search for a new manager is already underway, with reports linking Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola to the vacant position. The Spaniard enhanced his reputation this season after guiding Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish and securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in the club’s history.
