The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The government congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and urged citizens to use the occasion to promote national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, making this year’s celebration the 66th anniversary of independence.
The anniversary is being marked under the theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.”
The Federal Government said the theme reflects its focus on consolidating economic reforms and promoting stability, growth and shared prosperity.
It also urged Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and the progress and challenges recorded since independence.
Activities for the anniversary are expected to be low-key, with religious services, a public lecture and other commemorative events planned.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast to Nigerians as part of the Independence Day activities.
The declaration means Thursday, October 1, 2026, will be observed as a nationwide public holiday across Nigeria.
