Kano Approves N61.6bn for Projects, Allocates Additional N21.29bn for Water Infrastructure

The Kano State Executive Council has approved a total of N61.63 billion for strategic development projects across critical sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and urban renewal.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the Council’s 39th meeting held on April 28, 2026, at the Government House in Kano.

He noted that the decisions were part of ongoing efforts by the administration to accelerate development and improve service delivery across the state.

Education Sector Takes The Lead

In the education sector, the Council approved several interventions aimed at enhancing access and learning conditions.

These include over N4.45 billion for external examination fees such as National Examinations Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) for indigenous students in 2026, as well as N834.4 million for feeding in boarding schools.

The government also approved N2 billion for the procurement of furniture for primary and junior secondary schools, alongside funding for classroom renovation, construction, and provision of laboratory equipment.

Health and Infrastructure Strengthened

In the health sector, approvals cover the renovation of Wudil General Hospital, routine immunisation, maternal and child health services, and procurement of medical equipment.

The Council also made provisions for a statewide polio outbreak response and the supply of essential health commodities across all 44 local government areas.

On infrastructure, major approvals include road reconstruction projects and the construction of a key road linking Panshekara underpass to Madobi bridge, valued at over N5.28 billion, in addition to the renovation of public buildings.

Agriculture, Environment, and Urban Renewal

The Council approved N3.49 billion for the procurement of over 41,000 bags of fertiliser, as well as irrigation and agricultural facility upgrades.

Environmental initiatives include park beautification, drainage improvements, and landscaping, alongside continued investment in potable water supply.

Urban renewal efforts cover road markings, street naming, mapping, house numbering, and compensation for land acquisition.

N21.29bn Approved for Water Infrastructure

In a related development, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved an additional N21.29 billion for the rehabilitation of major water facilities.

The projects include the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and its raw water pump station at a cost of N9.9 billion, as well as N11.39 billion for the Challawa water treatment plant and pump station, including restoration of the Goron Dutse reservoirs.

The intervention is expected to significantly improve water supply across the state.

Other Approvals

Additional approvals span transportation, civil service welfare, urban planning, and religious affairs, including logistics for Hajj operations.

The Council also approved a review of the state-owned Triumph Publishing Company to enhance its operational efficiency.

In conclusion, Waiya reiterated that improving access to potable water remains a central focus of the administration, adding that the latest approvals complement earlier interventions in water provision and emergency borehole projects.

He stressed that the government will continue to prioritise policies and investments that directly impact the welfare and living conditions of residents across the state.
