In a major effort to strengthen transparency, credibility and academic excellence in the admission process into science and technical colleges, the Kano State Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB) has engaged university lecturers to supervise the ongoing common entrance examinations conducted across the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Science and Technical Schools Board, Associate Professor Dahiru Sale Muhammad, disclosed this while leading members of the board’s management team on a monitoring and evaluation tour of selected examination centres.
According to him, the decision to engage university lecturers as supervisors was part of measures aimed at ensuring a fair, transparent and malpractice-free examination process.
Professor Dahiru explained that the board remains committed to maintaining high standards in the selection of students into science and technical colleges, which have continued to play a critical role in producing skilled manpower for the state’s development.
He noted that the initiative would further enhance the credibility of the examination and guarantee that only qualified candidates gain admission into the schools.
“The engagement of university lecturers is intended to ensure an examination process that is free from misconduct and other forms of irregularities. We are determined to uphold the highest standards of integrity and excellence in our admission process,” he stated.
The Executive Secretary emphasized the importance of science and technical education in addressing contemporary socio-economic challenges, particularly youth unemployment and crime.
According to him, providing young people with quality scientific and technical knowledge equips them with practical skills needed for self-reliance, productivity and national development.
“Acquiring science and technical knowledge today will significantly contribute towards reducing unemployment and crime among our teeming youth population. Technical and vocational education remains one of the most effective tools for economic empowerment and sustainable development,” he said.
Professor Dahiru also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for what he described as unprecedented investments in the education sector, particularly the renovation and upgrading of science and technical schools across Kano State.
He said the administration has transformed many of the institutions through the provision of modern infrastructure, learning facilities and teaching equipment that now meet international standards.
According to him, the improvements have created a more conducive learning environment for both teachers and students, thereby enhancing the quality of education in the state.
The Executive Secretary further applauded the Sarki Abba Foundation for supporting healthcare services within schools, particularly through the establishment of a sick bay at the clinic of Government Science College, Dawakin Tofa.
He described the intervention as a valuable contribution toward improving the welfare and wellbeing of students.
Speaking during the monitoring exercise, Dr. Lawan Muhammad of the Department of Mathematics, Northwest University, Dr. Mujittapha Lawan of the Department of Education, and the Vice Principal of Government Science College, Dawakin Tofa, Inuwa Bature, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination.
They noted that the involvement of university lecturers would help restore public confidence in the admission process and strengthen educational standards from the grassroots level.
The education experts also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Executive Secretary of the board for their commitment to revitalizing science and technical education in Kano State.
According to them, the reforms being implemented by the present administration are laying a solid foundation for the production of competent, skilled and productive graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to the state’s socio-economic development.
They expressed optimism that sustained investment in science and technical education would help restore the sector’s past glory while preparing students to compete effectively in an increasingly technology-driven world.
The monitoring exercise formed part of the board’s efforts to ensure strict compliance with examination guidelines and maintain the integrity of the common entrance examination across all centres in Kano State.
