Former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, is set to defect from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was disclosed by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Kano State Government House, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday evening.
According to Bature, a team associated with Gawuna paid a solidarity visit to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and his deputy, Murtala Sule Garo, ahead of Gawuna’s expected defection to the APC.

The delegation was led by Hon. Muhammad Badaru Umar and Hon. Ali Datti Yako, identified as the NDC State Deputy Chairman.
The visit is believed to be part of consultations and preparations ahead of the formal announcement of Gawuna’s movement from the NDC to the APC.
Gawuna, a prominent Kano politician, served as Deputy Governor of Kano State before later emerging as the APC candidate in the 2023 Kano State governorship election.
His reported return to the APC is expected to generate considerable political interest in Kano, particularly as political parties and influential figures intensify consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development also comes against the backdrop of continuing political movements involving prominent Kano politicians, with alliances and defections expected to shape the political landscape of the state ahead of the next general elections.
