Fresh overnight strikes across Ukraine have killed several civilians and injured dozens more, worsening an already devastating humanitarian crisis that has left thousands dead and millions displaced since the war began.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said the latest wave of attacks struck multiple communities across the country, causing further civilian casualties and destruction to homes and essential infrastructure.

“Overnight strikes across Ukraine affected multiple communities, claiming more lives and leaving dozens injured,” the ICRC said, expressing growing concern over the continued toll of the conflict on ordinary civilians.

As the war drags on, civilians remain at the center of the suffering. Repeated missile and drone strikes have continued to hit populated areas, damaging residential buildings, hospitals, power facilities and transport infrastructure.

Emergency workers and medical teams have been forced to operate under extremely dangerous conditions as rescue operations continue in affected areas.

Humanitarian agencies say the number of people killed since the conflict escalated has continued to rise, while thousands more have been injured or remain missing.

Kharkiv Under Pressure

Among the cities heavily affected by the war is Kharkiv, where forensic institutions and emergency services have struggled to cope with the growing number of casualties.

The ICRC disclosed that it provided all four forensic institutions in Kharkiv with critical support to help them function under proper conditions and according to international standards.

The assistance included technical equipment, infrastructure support and operational assistance aimed at improving:

– Identification of human remains;
– Preservation of bodies;
– Documentation processes;
– Support for families searching for missing loved ones.

Humanitarian officials say such efforts are essential as many families continue to seek answers about relatives killed or missing during the war.

“Treating the Deceased With Dignity is Essential”

The ICRC stressed that managing the dead respectfully remains a critical humanitarian responsibility during armed conflict.

“Treating the deceased with dignity is essential – and so is supporting the professionals doing this vital work,” the organization said.

The statement highlights the enormous pressure facing forensic workers, mortuary staff and emergency responders handling bodies recovered from strike sites and conflict zones.

Many of these professionals work under traumatic conditions, often exposed to repeated attacks and mass casualty situations.

Surgeons Working Under Fire

Medical personnel continue risking their lives to save others despite ongoing attacks.

Dr. Bhavna Chawla, a surgeon with the ICRC working at the Red Cross Field Hospital, described the reality of providing emergency surgery close to active fighting zones.

“We’ve been through times where we’ve had shrapnel and stray shots pass over the hospital, entering the tents where we work, entering the wards at times,” she said.

Despite the danger, she said medical teams remain focused on saving lives.

“Somehow when you are in the operating theatre everything else kind of becomes this white noise that you don’t pay attention to,” she explained.

International Humanitarian Law

The ICRC has repeatedly called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law.

Under the laws of war:

– Civilians must be protected;
– Medical facilities must not be targeted;
– Humanitarian workers must be allowed to operate safely;
– The dead must be treated with dignity.

The organization warned that attacks affecting civilian infrastructure continue to deepen humanitarian suffering across the country.

Millions Affected by the War

Beyond the rising death toll, the war has triggered one of Europe’s largest humanitarian crises in decades.

Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced internally or forced to flee abroad, while many communities continue to face:

– Electricity shortages;
– Damaged healthcare systems;
– Psychological trauma;
– Separation from loved ones.

Humanitarian agencies say repeated attacks on urban centers are intensifying fear and uncertainty among civilians already exhausted by years of war.

A Conflict With Lasting Consequences

As overnight strikes continue to claim lives and destroy communities, humanitarian organizations warn that the long-term consequences of the war will extend far beyond the battlefield.

The ICRC says continued support for hospitals, forensic institutions and emergency services remains essential to helping civilians survive the crisis and preserving human dignity amid the devastation.

For many Ukrainians, however, the war has become a daily struggle not only for survival, but also for answers about missing relatives, lost homes and shattered futures.
