In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, six aspirants for the Kano Central Senatorial seat have reportedly withdrawn their ambitions in support of former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau.

The development was announced by former Kano State Head of Service, Usman Bala Muhammad, while addressing journalists at the Aminu Kano House in Abuja.

According to him, the decision followed consultations among stakeholders and party leaders aimed at strengthening unity and consolidating political support ahead of the elections.

Among those said to have stepped down for Shekarau are:

  • Muhammad Zango
  • Danyaro Yakasai
  • Usman Bala Muhammad
  • Shaaban Ibrahim Sharada
  • Shehu Isah Direba

The aspirants were said to have already purchased and submitted their nomination forms to the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat before the consensus arrangement emerged.

Usman Bala Muhammad disclosed that the aspirants agreed to rally behind Shekarau after what he described as a consensus-building intervention involving Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other political stakeholders.

Political observers say the move could significantly reshape the contest for the Kano Central Senatorial seat, given Shekarau’s longstanding influence in Kano politics and the weight of support from key political figures within the state.

The development is also seen as part of broader efforts to reduce internal rivalry and strengthen party cohesion ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 election season in Kano State.
