Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir of Qatar whose visionary leadership transformed the Gulf nation into one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential countries, has died at the age of 74, bringing to an end one of the most consequential political eras in the modern history of the Middle East.

The death of the former Emir was announced on Sunday by Qatar’s Amiri Diwan, which said Sheikh Hamad passed away in Doha.

The announcement prompted an outpouring of condolences from heads of state, governments and international organizations, reflecting his towering influence on regional and global affairs.

Funeral prayers for the late Father Amir are scheduled to be held after the Maghrib prayer at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha before his burial at Lusail Cemetery. Following the burial, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is expected to receive condolences from members of the ruling Al Thani family, world leaders, dignitaries and citizens over a three-day mourning period.

Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad ruled the country from 1995 until June 25, 2013, when he voluntarily handed power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in an unprecedented peaceful transition that set him apart from many leaders in the Gulf region.

His reign fundamentally reshaped Qatar’s political, economic and diplomatic standing, transforming the once relatively quiet Gulf state into a major player on the international stage.

One of Sheikh Hamad’s greatest achievements was overseeing the rapid development of Qatar’s vast natural gas reserves in the North Field, making the country one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The energy boom generated enormous wealth, lifting Qatar to among the highest-income countries globally on a per-capita basis and providing the resources for ambitious national development.

Beyond economic prosperity, Sheikh Hamad built Qatar into a respected diplomatic actor. Under his leadership, Doha emerged as an influential mediator in regional and international conflicts, facilitating negotiations involving Lebanon, Sudan, Afghanistan and Palestinian factions, while maintaining relations with a broad spectrum of international partners.

His commitment to independent journalism also left an enduring mark on global media. In 1996, Sheikh Hamad founded the Al Jazeera Media Network and Qatar Foundation which evolved into one of the world’s most influential news organizations. Al Jazeera transformed Arabic-language broadcasting and became a global media institution with television, digital and multilingual platforms reaching audiences across continents.

The late Father Amir also championed education, research and innovation through the expansion of Education City, attracting leading international universities and research institutions to Qatar.

His long-term development agenda laid the foundation for the country’s economic diversification beyond oil and gas.

On the international investment front, Sheikh Hamad oversaw the expansion of Qatar’s sovereign wealth investments, enabling the country to acquire strategic assets in Europe, Asia and North America. Those investments significantly strengthened Qatar’s global economic footprint.

His leadership also elevated Qatar’s status in international sports. During his reign, the country secured the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, making Qatar the first Arab and Middle Eastern nation to stage football’s biggest tournament, an achievement that permanently placed the country on the global sporting map.

Internationally, Sheikh Hamad will be remembered as a visionary Arab statesman who combined economic transformation with diplomatic ambition.

Analysts credit him with positioning Qatar as a bridge between East and West while strengthening its role within the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab world and the wider international community.

His death has triggered condolences from leaders across the globe.

Pakistan’s President, Asif Ali Zardari, expressed profound sorrow, describing Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader whose contributions strengthened Qatar and the broader Muslim world.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed condolences, praising the late Father Amir’s role in deepening relations between India and Qatar and acknowledging his contributions to regional peace and development.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi sent a message of sympathy to Qatar’s leadership and people, describing Sheikh Hamad as a leader whose achievements advanced Qatar’s development and elevated its international standing.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun similarly paid tribute to the late Emir, recalling his contributions to Arab causes and regional diplomacy.

More messages of condolence are continuing to arrive from monarchs, presidents, prime ministers and international organizations, underscoring Sheikh Hamad’s influence far beyond Qatar’s borders.

For many observers, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s greatest legacy lies in transforming Qatar from a small Gulf state into a globally recognized power in energy, diplomacy, media, education, investment and international sports.

As Qatar prepares to lay its Father Amir to rest in Doha, the nation also bids farewell to the leader widely credited with shaping its modern identity.

His vision, reforms and global outlook altered the trajectory of Qatar’s history, ensuring that his name will remain synonymous with the country’s remarkable rise on the world stage.
