Kano State has taken a leading role in Nigeria’s evolving Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) landscape, as the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB), Dahiru Sale Mohammed, participated in a high-level national workshop in Abuja.

The workshop, organized through a collaboration between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Government of South Korea, and the Federal Government of Nigeria, focused on strengthening TVET systems to address unemployment and equip young Nigerians with industry-relevant skills.

Speaking at the event, Professor Dahiru emphasized Kano State’s commitment to aligning with national and global standards in technical education, noting that the state has already begun implementing transformative reforms across its technical colleges.

A major highlight of the reform is the selection of Kano as a pilot state for testing the newly developed national TVET curriculum, with implementation taking place at Government Technical College Bagauda. The pilot programme is expected to shape the final structure of the curriculum before its nationwide rollout.

Back home, the STSB Executive Secretary revealed that technical colleges in Kano have transitioned from conventional learning centres into production and maintenance hubs, where students and instructors actively engage in the production of goods and services. He added that the institutions are also embracing renewable energy innovation, including the conversion of electrical appliances to solar-powered systems.

Professor Dahiru explained that the transformation is aimed at enhancing the technical knowledge and practical capacity of both students and teachers, while bridging the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application.

He further charged Heads of Department across the colleges to serve as the “engine-room” of production, urging them to drive innovation and ensure that the reform translates into tangible outcomes at the institutional level.

The STSB boss also commended the principals of Government Science and Technical College Mairo Tijjani and Government Science and Technical College Ja’oji for leading their schools in producing various goods showcased at the Kano State Trade Fair, describing the feat as a practical demonstration of the success of the reform.

He equally praised the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his unwavering commitment to revitalizing education, particularly his intervention in recovering long-leased workshops at Government Technical College Kano, which has restored critical facilities for hands-on training.

“The support of the state government has been instrumental in repositioning our technical colleges into centres of excellence and productivity,” he noted.

Kano’s growing prominence in TVET reforms which is backed by international partnerships, pilot programmes, and practical innovations positions the state as a model for technical education development in Nigeria.

The combined efforts of government, institutions, and global partners are expected to boost skills acquisition, reduce youth unemployment, and drive economic growth, as Kano continues to transform its education sector into a hub of innovation and productivity.
