The Kano State Government has distributed over 700 fire extinguishers and sporting facilities to colleges under the Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB) as part of efforts to strengthen safety measures, sports development and the learning environment across its institutions.
The development was confirmed to GLOBAL TRACKER by Sa’idu Shu’aibu Garko, a Director at the Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB) who also doubles as the Principal of Government Technical College, Nassarawa.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at improving safety preparedness in STSB institutions while also providing students with facilities capable of supporting sporting activities and talent development.
The exercise, which took place on Thursday, September 17, 2026, also featured specialised fire safety technology training for Principals, Heads of Departments (HODs) and selected staff of the STSB Secretariat.
The training was organised by the Science and Technical Schools Board under the leadership of its Executive Secretary, Prof. Dahiru Sale Mohammed, in collaboration with the Kano State Fire Service.
Participants were trained on fire prevention, safety procedures and appropriate emergency response measures, with emphasis on equipping school administrators and designated personnel with the knowledge required to respond effectively to fire-related emergencies.
The distribution of the fire extinguishers is expected to strengthen the preparedness of STSB institutions and provide schools with basic firefighting equipment to help prevent the spread of fire and protect students, staff and school property.
The sporting facilities distributed to the colleges are also expected to support physical education and sports activities, providing students with improved opportunities to develop and showcase their sporting talents.
The initiative further underscores the importance of fire-safety awareness and emergency preparedness within educational institutions, particularly schools with large populations of students and staff.
The collaboration between the STSB and the Kano State Fire Service also provides an opportunity for school administrators and other designated personnel to acquire practical knowledge on fire prevention and emergency response.
The initiative demonstrates the commitment of the Kano State Government and STSB to students’ safety, staff capacity building, sports development and the provision of safer and better-equipped learning environments across science and technical schools in the state.
